Everything You Need to Know About a Chemical Peel

Everything You Need to Know About a Chemical Peel

About 80% of facial aging comes from ultraviolet (UV) radiation exposure, but you can turn back the hands of time by choosing a simple chemical peel. This revitalizing treatment is customized to your unique needs and offers dramatic anti-aging results.

Refresh your skin from within. Learn more about which chemical peels match your beauty goals by visiting with our dermatology specialists at Vindhya Veerula MD - Integrative Dermatology & Laser Spa.

Chemical peels 101

Chemical peels with Dr. Veerula are resurfacing treatments that refresh, tighten, and tone treated tissues without invasive procedures.

They use a chemical solution to exfoliate your outermost skin cells and stimulate new cell growth by harnessing your body’s natural healing powers. What to expect during chemical peels depends on the strength of the chemicals used.

Types of chemical peels

Common types of chemical peels include:

How often to schedule chemical peels

How frequently you can undergo chemical peels depends on the strength of your peel. You may schedule light peels about every 2-5 weeks, but you don’t have more than one deep facial peel. You can repeat medium chemical peels periodically as instructed to maintain rejuvenated skin with a healthy glow.

Preparing for chemical peels

It’s important to follow all of our instructions before, during, and after chemical peels at Vindhya Veerula MD - Integrative Dermatology & Laser Spa to achieve a superior outcome.

Prepare for your peel by avoiding tanning beds and direct sun exposure for several weeks. Dr. Veerula may ask you to apply topical products before treatment or take oral medications. The treatment area must be free of infections, lesions, and sores.

What chemical peels entail

Dr. Veerula cleans your skin to remove any excess oil, numbs the area or administers anesthesia, and applies a chemical solution to your skin.

The solution we use might contain trichloroacetic acid, glycolic acid, salicylic acid, carbolic acid (phenol), or lactic acid. These chemicals cause a controlled injury, penetrating various skin depths to exfoliate treated tissues and uncover new skin layers. You may feel a warming or stinging sensation during the peel.

Light peels

Light peels offer subtle improvements over time and generally require a series of treatments to maintain a healthy glow. You can expect a sunburn-like reaction for several days, but there’s little to no down time. You can often wear makeup the next day.

Medium peels

Medium peels provide a refreshed, smooth look with a weeklong recovery time and some downtime. Swelling, redness, stinging, crusting, and skin flaking are common side effects. You must complete daily soaks, apply ointment, and take medications to prevent infection, and you can wear makeup after about 5-7 days.

Deep peels

Deep peels offer dramatic results, but they require longer downtime. You wear bandages for a few days afterward, and healing often lasts several weeks. You must complete daily skin soaks and apply ointment. Wait at least 14 days before applying makeup.

Follow your aftercare instructions to maximize healing and keep your skin protected from the sun. Over time, new skin skin cells form and healthier tissues emerge.
